About

My name is Lisa Schatz, I hold a dual registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as both a Registered Counsellor and Psychometrist. Following my Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Psychology and Communication Science, I obtained my Honours degree in Psychology. This allowed me to complete my internship and board exam with the HPCSA to register as a Registered Counsellor at the beginning of 2011. During this time, I worked primarily offering counselling and decided to broaden my scope of practice by undertaking further studies and completing another internship, which led to my registration with the HPCSA as a Psychometrist (Independent Practice).

I thoroughly enjoy the balance that my profession allows between counselling and administering psychometric assessments. Furthermore, I supervise Registered Counsellor interns completing their internships and also present workshops on a variety of topics to parents, students, teachers as well as to corporate clients. I have been involved in various community projects, ranging from working with animals, victims of crime, the physically and mentally handicapped, the elderly and with people from underprivileged socio-economic backgrounds.

In order to provide the best service possible, I attend as many Continuous Professional Development workshops, seminars, lectures, and training sessions as possible. I have trained and worked in multiple settings, with an array of people from all walks of life. For the past 10 years, I worked both in a high school as the in-house counsellor and also ran my own practice in Century City, Cape Town. As of January 2020, I practise full time from my office in Flamingo Vlei, Table View.

Prior to embarking on my studies in the field of Psychology, I found myself continuously motivated to seek out the rationale of what makes us who we are. I am fascinated by the human mind! Psychological theories provide a framework to understand and explain human behaviour, thoughts and actions, in addition to predicting future behaviour. My experience and exposure to a variety of theories, has led me to believe that the common thread connecting them all is that one’s behaviours and thought processes are directly influenced by a multitude of factors. My belief is that human-beings are not inherently bad or malicious, our behaviours are influenced by our unique perspectives and frames of reference. Ultimately, we do the best with the emotional resources that we have.

I have witnessed the impact that counselling, self-development and self-acceptance can have on an individual’s well-being. These are just a few reasons why I am so passionate about what I do, whether it be counselling, BrainWorking Recursive Therapy (BWRT), hosting a workshop, career assessments, subject choice assessments or an assessment to determine whether a student qualifies for examination dispensations or exemptions.
